Ladybugs aren't bugs, they're beetles and 'Lady' refers to the Virgin Mary, and they were given the honorary name 'Our Lady's Beetle.' They use aposematic coloration to signal their toxicity to would-be predators. They consume a lot of plant damaging pests and are considered desirable insects.
